Nourishing Healing Moments with Barb

March is National Nutrition Month and along with encouraging healthy ways to fuel our bodies and minds, March also brings us the first day of Spring. Springing forward in time, and recently without additional snow, gives us more waking daylight to enjoy deep breaths of fresh air and a renewed sense of spirit. 

Instead of just looking at the to do list spring time brings, write “time to really breathe” to the top of it.

Better yet, check out your breaths by asking yourself the following questions:

  • Do you ever focus on your breathing or is it just a spontaneous habit that keeps you going? 

  • If you are aware of your breath, is it a deep oxygen filling breath with an exhale of toxins and anxiety? 

  • Or is it one of those shallow, wimpy breaths (chest breathing) that hold in stress, anxiety and upset? This type can even impact your food choices and digestion! 

  • Do you breathe like that occasionally or most of the time? 

If it is most of the time, try this:

  1. Rest one hand on your belly, and one on your chest. 

  2. Now breathe in through your nose, a deep breath that makes your belly push your hand out (without moving the hand on your chest). 

  3. Then blow air out of your mouth while your hand goes back down with your belly. 

  4. Repeat 3 – 5 times. 

  5. If you get light headed, you are breathing too fast. Slow down by counting to five on the inhale, holding for the count of two and then exhale to the count of six or seven. As you repeat this you will feel any tension flow out with your breath. 

Congratulations! You have now taught yourself deep breathing! Practice throughout the day until it becomes routine. It is a first step in helping control your stress and anxiety.
